If you've spent any time researching grounding sheets, you've probably noticed that prices vary wildly, from $30 to $300+. And you might be wondering: is there actually a difference? Or is it all the same thing with different marketing?
It's not all the same. The materials matter enormously, and here's why.
The two things a grounding sheet needs to do well
First, it needs to conduct. A grounding sheet that doesn't effectively transfer electrons from the earth to your body isn't doing its job, regardless of what the packaging says.
Second, it needs to be safe in contact with skin, particularly for babies, who spend many hours pressed against their sheets and whose skin absorbs more per body weight than adults.
Why silver, and why purity matters
Most grounding sheets use some form of conductive thread. Common options include stainless steel (essentially steel wool, uncomfortable and poorly conductive), carbon fibre, and silver.
Silver is the most conductive metal on earth. It also has natural antimicrobial properties, which is an added benefit for bedding. But not all silver threads are equal.
At My Barefoot Baby, we use 99.9% pure silver thread, what's classified as supreme grade. We spent nearly a year developing our weave specifically to balance conductivity, durability, and softness. The silver content in cheaper sheets is often far lower, which means lower conductivity and a sheet that may not work as intended.
Why organic cotton, and what GOTS actually means
Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world. It accounts for a significant portion of global pesticide use, and those chemicals don't always fully wash out of finished fabrics. For a product you're sleeping on every night, or that your baby is lying on for 10–12 hours a day, this matters.
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It's the most rigorous certification available for organic textiles, covering everything from the farming of raw fibres through to manufacturing, processing, and labelling. A GOTS certification isn't just about the cotton being organically grown, it also prohibits the use of toxic dyes, finishes, and chemical treatments throughout the entire production chain.
For babies especially, whose skin is more permeable and whose immune systems are still developing, sleeping on GOTS certified bedding is a meaningful choice.
The cheap alternative problem
We've heard from customers who tried cheaper grounding sheets before finding us. The common experiences: thin, scratchy fabric that degrades after a few washes; silver content that oxidises quickly and stops conducting; loose weaves that don't maintain contact with skin through the night; and no clear certification on the materials touching their child's body.

What to look for when choosing a grounding sheet
Look for independently verified silver purity (not just 'contains silver'). Look for GOTS certification on the cotton, not just 'organic' claims. Ask whether the manufacturer can show you the certification documents. And check the construction, a grounding sheet should maintain consistent skin contact, which requires good elastic, appropriate depth, and a weave that holds up over time.
These aren't premium extras. They're the baseline for a product that actually works and that's safe for the whole family.
